Blowin’ Smoke is blowing good stuff

Lots of us were happy when Blowin’ Smoke moved to the new Habersham location. And as an added bonus to not having to drive all the way to MLK, they added some delightful goodies to the menu. Since I love fish and love tacos, the blackened fish taco caught my eye right away….and proved to be every bit as good as I’d hoped. I’ve eaten so much Tilapia over the past fw years, I thought I’d grown tired of it…but not THIS tilapia! The beautifully seasoned blackening mix adds such good flavor, and the portion is large, to put it mildly! The addition of a mole sauce was perfect. My dining companion had the pulled pork enchilada with mole sauce. Seemed a bit more like a burrito than an enchilada, but purely delicious.

Treats and Specials for You and Your Pooch!

This Saturday, March 30, promises to be a great day for dog-loving foodies!  Blue Turtle Bistro and Femme Fatale Hair Salon will be two among every shop in the shopping center to devote this day to raising money for the Humane Society. The hair salon will be doing $10 hair cuts among other things, and Blue Turtle will have Happy (and Yappy)  Hour Specials all day long!  The Chef has whipped up some special treats for humans, plus some newly created doggie treats — peanut butter and bacon sound good to your pup?  Blue Turtle mixologist has also come up with some new cocktails to honor the four- legged set:  The Dalmation (Chocolate Vodka) cocktail, the French Bulldog (champagne +), and the Tabby Cat (Mimosa’s new cousin).  Have fun, and a happy yappy day!

Today is the Day for Wet Willie’s newest location!

As you no doubt know, I almost never mention a chain Restaurant or bar. But Wet Willie’s was born n Savannah more than 20 years ago, created by a few savvy Savannahians, and remains headquartered here in its home town. So we’re proud of Wet Willie’s and happy for its success.

Located at 232 West St. Julian St., on the corner of West St. Julian St.
and Jefferson St. in City Market, the new Wet Willie?s will feature two
levels of dining, indoor and outdoor seating, hand-painted murals by Bill
Wrigley and restored original interior décor features including period
stained glass windows and doors. The restaurant and bar will serve lunch and dinner daily.  All of the restaurant?s signature frozen drinks  including Call-A-Cab, Sex on the Beach and Attitude Improvement ? will be available to enjoy in-house or to-go.

The menu will feature old favorites like Chicken Wings, Savannah
Shrimp and Grits, Quesadillas and Black Angus Burgers as well as brand-new menu items like a Savannah Shrimp Boil, Apple Pecan Salad, a Turkey Club with bacon and fried green tomatoes.

Blowin’ Smoke to soon blow over Habersham St.

For lots of us who live further east and south than the current MLK location,  the new venue is exciting news.  Not only am I personally happy about being closer to the best bbq in town, but I’m delighted to be close to their marvelous black bean chili!  They expect to open before the end of the month, depending on the speed of kitchen renovations and, of course, permits. Savannahbest awaits!

New Restaurant by the creators of Local 11 Ten

No question about it, Local 11 Ten is among the finest restaurants in a city of fine eateries!  So it seemed reasonable to assume that their new place, Public Kitchen & Bar, at the corner of Liberty & Bull St.,  would be exceptionally good as well.  More casual, more affordable, but surely great! Well, so far, at least, it seems to disappoint. Right off, they don’t have a menu posted anywhere, not on-line where they have a Facebook page, nor anywhere else. We have a copy of their daytime menu….called to try and find out what was on the evening menu and were told “some steaks, a pasta dish and a fresh fish dish.”  They do have a nice array of salads and sandwiche…. tried the Spinach salad, made as it should be with bacon dressing–really good! And sampled the crab cake–okay, but nothing to write home about. An interesting lineup of burgers….unfortunately, they say they cook them all medium-well. Which, to me at least, simply screams “overcooked and dry.” Did not try.  Well, it’s been less than a month since they opened, they’re in a perfect location, they should do well no matter what. Hopefully, a lot of kinks will be straightened out…. I’ll be back to see!
