Basil’s Pizza: It’s All Greek to Us!

They call it a pizzeria; they rave about their pizza. But there’s plenty of good pizza in Savannah.  There is precious little good Greek anything.  But Basil’s has some of the best Greek food anywhere on the eastern seaboard. The Avgolemono Soup, a classic Greek soup made from fresh chicken broth, lots of lemon, egg, and rice, is creamy, thick and better than any Avgolemono I have ever eaten outside of Greece.  The Dolmadas, stuffed grape leaves, tender young grape leaves, filled with a perfectly spiced blend of lamb and rice, are definitely Savannah’s best. It’s a definite mystery as to where they get their Feta Cheese and Kalamata olives, but they are another “Best.” As is their Pita bread…made in-house, perhaps? Whatever the case, if you love Greek food, head for Basil’s—216 Johnny Mercer Blvd., 897-6400.  .

Leoci’s is OPEN! — Finally

Chef Roberto was all smiles Monday afternoon. After a protracted period of delays his kitchen, with its imported wood burning oven, was open. The black and white motif of the tables were set off nicely by the hand made brocade banquette seating.  We ordered the Antipasti Leoci’s — assorted cold cuts and cheeses, grilled vegetables and oven roasted olives. The surprise — it comes slightly heated, which really brought out the flavor of the Italian salami, prosciutto and mortadella.  Then a pasta course, capellini with aglio olio, and a pizza Margherita — all of which will give us another dinner tomorrow night, and probably  lunch. Everything delicioso!  More details soon. This place is a winner!

Leoci’s Trattoria to Open Soon!

“It’s going to be a casual,  affordable neighborhood cafe,”  says owner,  Chef Roberto Leoci, who with his wife,  is currently hard at work renovating the little restaurant at 606 Abercorn.   There will be a spacious outdoor deck along one side and around the back, plus they hope eventually to have a bocce court.  The menu will be Italian,  primarily pizza, pasta and panini. However, when we mentioned our passion for veal, the chef said he might add a nice veal scaloppini to the mix.  Leoci already has his beer and wine license approved, so that obstacle course is over. He hopes to be open in just a few weeks, though we suspect the extensive renovations may take a bit longer than that.  Buon appetito!

A Screamin’ Great Pizza!

Just had a pizza from Screamin’Mimi’s at 513 E. Oglethorpe. Definitely the best mushroom and green pepper (my favorite) pizza I’ve ever eaten. The peppers are in big, plump chunks, plenty of fresh mushrooms atop an absolutely delicious crust! And they have a couple of tables outdoors, which means, doggie delight!
