Forget cooking on Turkey-Day!

If you’re among the legions that hate cooking Thanksgiving Dinner, we’ve got a couple of options for you (and probably more to come).  Blowin’ Smoke is offering smoked turkey with all the trimmings; so is Johnny Harris, 354-7810.  Blowin’ Smoke is making deliveries, but doubt it will deliver too far away, so better call and find out if you’re in their delivery area,  231-2385.  In both cases, get your dinner the day before the Big Event!

Is Your Sauce Worth A Million Bucks?

If so, have a try at Dave’s Gourmet Recipe Challenge. You could win up to a $1 million in royalties.  Send your sauce, salsa, dip or spread to Dave’s Gourmet early enough that it arrives by Dec. 31, 2011, and you could win!

Rules:  You must warrant that this is your recipe and yours alone.

Recipes will be judged in five categories:  taste, appearance, creativity, consumer appeal and the recipe’s ability to be mass-produced (that is, if one of the ingredients is hand-cut bay leaves from a tree that grows only in the southernmost tip of Italy, it probably would be too difficult to manufacture.

The sauce will be produced for Dave’s Gourmet’s retailers and may have the winner’s name right on the label.

Winner will receive royalties for 6 years, up to $1 million.

All chefs, amateur or professional, are free to enter.

And good luck!  If you win, please let us know!

Foxy Loxy Does It Right

The latest addition to the bountiful array of good eats available in the Thomas Square neighborhood is Foxy Loxy. It’s a café/art gallery in the old Pizza Rustica location on Bull St.  The folks at the recent monthly meeting of Green Drinks were treated to what several say was the best cocktail buffet they’ve ever had, and the group has, over the years, met at virtually every possible downtown area location. This time they were treated to a variety of nibbles, including slow roasted pulled pork with apple chutney, Chipotle-Pimento cheese pinwheels, tomatillo and orange salsa with chips, chocolate pepita shortbread, and a cheese and grape platter. Since then, I’ve heard raves about their coffees (all from PERC), their sandwiches, and especially their quiche of jeuvos rancheros.  The menu changes daily, but it tends to have a Mexic ana flavor, plus in-house made desserts that draw raves. The wine and craft beer list is impressive. Open Monday through Saturday, the gallery has a frequently changing array of  etchings, prints, lithos and woodcuts by local artists. More info: 401-0543.
