A Fond Farewell

We are sad to inform you that one of Savannah’s most iconic restaurants is set to close.  The Crystal Beer Parlor, which opened its’ doors for the first time in 1933, will officially close on October 24th.  We hope you’ll find time to say goodbye, and let owners Suzanne and Buddy know how much you’ve appreciated their food over the years.  We’ll sure miss that crab soup.

Have you been…

to Five Guys Burgers & Fries?  One of our crew paid a visit and said it was the best burger he’d had in years.  We hear their cajun fries aren’t so bad either.  Located at News Place in Ellis Square, it’s sure to be a hot spot for a lunch on the go.  If you get the chance to go over there, we’d love to hear your comments!

EOS reviewed

My original review of Eos was written just about 10 days after they opened six months ago. I’ve returned so many times since, thought it time I updated a bit. An unabashed taster of my dining companions’ dishes, between theirs and my own, I’ve sampled a lot of food at this charming spot. Check out the new review.

Revised Hours at the Starland Cafe

Hours at this wonderful lunch spot are shortened, now from 11 am to 3 pm. Monday through Friday. If you haven’t done so already, do get over there and sample one of their great, always freshly made, salads. My favorite: The Kitchen Sink, with romaine, red grapes, asparagus, artichoke hearts, golden raisins, dates, red onion, green apples, crunchy low mein noodles, and fire roasted tomatoes, served with a tomato oil infused buttermilk dressing. This unique combination just can’t be beat! Or their Tomato Thai Soup, with two kinds of roasted squash pureed with tomatoes and Thai spices. Or any of their grilled panini sandwiches on Ciabatta bread. Wish they were open 24/7.  11 E. 41st St., next to the Dog Park. 443-9355.

Cafe 37 Hoping for Wine License

We hear that this delightful addition to the lunch/brunch/often French spot at 37th & Abercorn is hoping for a license soon to serve wines with their delicious fare. Great idea, especially for their French specialties like Escargot or Duck Mousse! Meantime, do try their fresher-than-fresh Caesar Salad with white anchovies, French Onion Soup, or Chicken and Gorgonzola sandwich on sun-dried tomato focaccia! Open 10 am to 4 pm Tues. through Fri.; 10 am to 3 pm Sat. & Sun. 236-8533.

New Restaurant to Open Soon!

Two of Savannah’s favorite chefs and caterers, John Baker III, and Alicia Cannon, are joining forces to open a new restaurant to be called Bar Food sometime in the next few weeks in Habersham Village, just south of Ardsley Park. Baker and Cannon were owner and manager, respectively, of the much lamented Queeny’s To Go Go Restaurant.  Bar Food will be a food, beer and wine bar offering small plates, tapas-style, of delicious eats to go with beer and wine.   Tastings are in the offing, too. We’ll keep you posted on the opening date.
