Blowin’ Smoke is blowing good stuff

Lots of us were happy when Blowin’ Smoke moved to the new Habersham location. And as an added bonus to not having to drive all the way to MLK, they added some delightful goodies to the menu. Since I love fish and love tacos, the blackened fish taco caught my eye right away….and proved to be every bit as good as I’d hoped. I’ve eaten so much Tilapia over the past fw years, I thought I’d grown tired of it…but not THIS tilapia! The beautifully seasoned blackening mix adds such good flavor, and the portion is large, to put it mildly! The addition of a mole sauce was perfect. My dining companion had the pulled pork enchilada with mole sauce. Seemed a bit more like a burrito than an enchilada, but purely delicious.

An Ode to Soft Shelled Crab and to Chef Chris DeNello

Soft shelled crab has been one of my five most favorite foods ever since I first tasted it some 25 years ago. So of course, when I saw it was among the specials a few nights ago at Alligator Soul, I immediately ordered it. These wonderful little creatures are only available about once a year, so when they are, I grab them! These proved to be, unquestionably, the very best I have ever eaten, any time, anywhere. Chef Chris DiNello’s amazing artistry in the kitchen never fails to astound me. These marvelous morsels were sautéed w/Seasoned Georgia Peanut, Organic Local Ground Ginger and L cal Corn Meal Flour. House made Kim Chi, Lemon Dressed Local Organic Red Sorrell, Cajun Steamed and Grilled Crawfish, Spiced Bourbon Caramel rounded off the dish, which was served with Creamy Freeman Mills Stone Ground Grits.

More than satisfied at Satisfied

On my most recent trip to Satisfied, I started off with their Flash Fried Asparagus as an appetizer. Now I love asparagus, and have eaten dozens of fried asparagus appetizers over the years, most of which I usually carefully extract from their coating and just eat the delicious green stalk. But their light and delicate batter is in itself filled with flavor, and I gobbled down every bite of it, all enhanced with a bit of mango aioli. Downright delicious!

Skyler’s — A Not So Hidden Gem?

When first one, then two, friends both food lovers, told me they’d had a fabulous dinner at Sklar’s, I was at first surprised, then intrigued. I’d heard of the place, probably walked past it a hundred times on Bay St., but paid little attention. So now, I called around to other restaurant-going pals to see if anyone else had ben there. Not many had, but those who’d actually gone there had nothing but praise. I discovered that the place is owned by a couple–he a born and raised Southerner from Atlanta, she from Vietnam. And that they often meld their cuisines together . For instance, a petite filet mignon with an a sauce that hints of Asian flavors, friend shrimp with a light as air tempura batter…Every one I talked to mentioned the crab cakes, much lighter than the traditional ones, and someone mentioned a delicious lemongrass-flavored chicken.
Several people also mentioned that the service leaves much to be desired, but the food makes that almost irrelevant. I’ll be checking it out one day soon!

Treats and Specials for You and Your Pooch!

This Saturday, March 30, promises to be a great day for dog-loving foodies!  Blue Turtle Bistro and Femme Fatale Hair Salon will be two among every shop in the shopping center to devote this day to raising money for the Humane Society. The hair salon will be doing $10 hair cuts among other things, and Blue Turtle will have Happy (and Yappy)  Hour Specials all day long!  The Chef has whipped up some special treats for humans, plus some newly created doggie treats — peanut butter and bacon sound good to your pup?  Blue Turtle mixologist has also come up with some new cocktails to honor the four- legged set:  The Dalmation (Chocolate Vodka) cocktail, the French Bulldog (champagne +), and the Tabby Cat (Mimosa’s new cousin).  Have fun, and a happy yappy day!
