3rd Annual Buccaneer Ball

Don’t miss this night of swash-buckling fun at The Crab Shack.  This event kicks off the 6th Annual Pirate Fest at Tybee, so come dressed in your best pirate gear for a chance to be named King and Queen of Pirate Fest!  Live entertainment, grub and grog, and of course prizes for Best Pirate and Best Wench.  Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.  October 7, from 7-10pm.  You must be over 18 to attend this event.

Melting Pot Contest

Shrimp Lovers Alert!

The 4th Annual Shrimp & Grits: The Wild Georgia Shrimp Festival kicks off Friday,  Sept. 18, for three days of shrimp lovers’ fun!  Cooking competitions, shrimp boat excursions,  shrimp eating contests, cooking demos, entertainment and much more at Jekyll Island’s beautiful historic district.  Friday night kicks off with $3.00 shrimp night, where for $3,  you can sample each of the many vendors shrimp dishes.

Taste of Thunderbolt Seafood Festival

Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi, the 700 year old winemaking dynasty, has launched their ‘Tuscany to You’ recipe contest!  The contest invites busy home cooks, aspiring chefs and food lovers from across America to submit a favorite Italian recipe for a chance to win a Tuscan feast for four cooked in the comfort of their own home by visiting Italian chef Donatella Zampoli
(formerly of Michelin starred Mas del Saugo in Northern Italy).  The contest
will run through July 31, 2009 and recipes will be submitted through the

Eat Local Savannah Contest !

Since we at SavannahBest have long championed the idea of “eat local,” we’re more than happy to post the following:

Local 11 Ten Hosts The First ‘Eat Local Savannah’ Poster Design Contest. We’re offering Savannah College of Art and Design students the opportunity to promote Savannah’s local farmers and producers. SCAD students who are currently enrolled in classes, and recent winter quarter graduates are encouraged to participate in the poster competition. Beginning Monday, April 6 and continuing until Friday, May 8, students can submit PDF files of their design to kprovost@greenolivemedia.com . We will post three posters to the website and a link for community members to vote for their favorite design on Monday, May 11. Contestants may use any means possible, including social media groups, event boards and blog posts to drive viewers to vote online. We will host a reception on May 27, 6:30-7:30 p.m. to announce the winning design and official “Eat Local Savannah” poster. The winning designer will take home a $150 cash prize, a complimentary dinner for two at Local 11 Ten, and a printed copy of his or her design. Additional details:
Posters should be graphically attractive and use a dynamic message.
Only original artwork will be considered.
Poster should be no larger than 18″ x 24″.
The poster must include the words “Eat Local Savannah” and the Local 11 Ten Website address, www.local11ten.com or posters that mimic ad campaigns will not be accepted.

Savannah Chili Bowl Cookoff

A fundraiser for Second Harvest Food Bank, the Chili Bowl Cookoff will be at Greyson Stadium Sat.,   Feb. 28,  from 11 am to 3 pm. The cost is $2.00 plus a can of tuna.  Eat and enjoy!

Five Alarm Call for Firehouse Cooks!

Here’s a way for all you firemen to fire up your bank account and have fun doing it.  The Tabasco folks have just opened their Fifth National Cook & Ladder Competition, in search of the nation’s hottest firehouse cook. Recipes must be original, fiery recipes and can be for any type of dish, appetizer to dessert and all inbetween, and must, of course, contain at least one of the Tabsco pepper sauces.  Cooks with professional culinary training are excluded. First prize is $10,000. All winnings to be split between the winning cook and his/her firehouse. For more details, entry forms,  go to www.tabasco.com.

Savannah Teen enroute to Chef Cap

Jonathan Miller, just turned 19 and currently interning at The New South Cafe, just won  the 2008 Best Teen Cook competition sponsored by the Art Institute of Atlanta and Food Network. He receives two years’ free tuition and will be Intern for A Day at Food Network. When he gets his B.Sc. in Culinary Management he’ll be on the way to donning a permanent Chef’s Hat.
